Evaluation Dates Set For 2014 Winter Academy
500+ SIGNED UP - LIMITED SPOTS AVAILABLE!
START THE WEEK OF MONDAY SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2014
The Evaluation process for the upcoming 2014-2015 Winter Academy training season is now open. The Riverhounds Academy Winter Training program is open to ALL players regardless of club affiliation and offers top technical, tactical, and Speed and Strength training for boys and girls ages 3-17yrs. Led by current professional players and coaches, The Academy's enrollment has grown to 1000+ players since 2007 and has swiftly become recognized as the top training environment for young aspiring players.
Quick facts about the Winter Academy - 15 week program that starts the week of Monday November 3rd, 2014
- Involves both Academy training and Speed and Strength programming
- Location: Greentree SportsPlex
- Each player receives a full Riverhounds Academy training uniform and bag
- Guaranteed player improvement and professional environment
- Exposure to current Riverhounds professional players and coaches
The first step for ANY player that would like to potentially participate in the training Academy is the evaluation. The evaluation allows the Academy trainers to assess the standard of each player prior to the start of the training program in November. The evaluation serves as the entry point to the Academy and allows the staff to make a decision on what group a player will be placed for the Winter.
The Riverhounds Academy follows a tiered structure at each age group (U9+) This varies across the age ranges but usually follows the following format -
Riverhounds Development Academy (RDA) (STRONGEST)
It is important to remember that we only offer the Tier 3 groupings at the most popular age groups. This format is determined by the evaluation numbers and is an ongoing process. A player can move between the groups at ANY time throughout the Academy. This is a system that we have had in place for the last six years and the results of this have produced groups of players who are at the same level technically. This produces training groups that are efficient in size, quality, and overall competition.
It is important for families to understand that, as we grow, we are expanding our offerings to include as many players as QUALITY CONTROLS will allow. As families in our Academy will support, we make a total commitment to everyone involved. Our evaluations aim to identify those players who display a total commitment to the game. Rather than accept everyone and interfere with our strong teaching ratios for financial gain, we work diligently to provide the best experiences possible for all involved. Not all players that attend an evaluation will be invited into the Academy program.
Who does not require an evaluation? 1) Any player that is younger than 6 years old as of September 1st, 2014 will NOT be required to register for an evaluation. That player will be eligible for the Regular Futures program and can sign up for that program accordingly. For the Winter Academy we will not be accepting any players that are under the age of 5. The player must be 5 by the start of the evaluation process.
2) Any player that is interested in the Riverhounds GK Academy. The registration for the Winter GK Academy will be open very soon and all information will be released at that time.
3) Any player that is invited into the Riverhounds Development Academy (RDA) fall program. The fall RDA invites will come from players that participated in the summer program and remain at the standard required. The staff will use the fall as an evaluation tool for winter placement.
The Evaluation The evaluation process will start the week of Monday September 15th, 2014 and will run for three weeks. It will be broken up per age group with the format described below.
- Price - $25
- 50 minutes in length
- Location - Greentree SportsPlex or Highmark Stadium
- Capped at 25 players per session
- Each player must only attend ONE evaluation for his/her age group
- A player may NOT attend an evaluation outside his/her age range
As noted above the 2014-2015 Winter Academy Evaluation Sessions will be capped at 25 players per session, so that the Academy Staff can reasonably assess five main areas of interest:
1) Dribbling: a player's ability to maneuver a ball through a variety of sequences and exercises using both feet
2) Passing: the player's accuracy and passing weight/quality will both be tested
3) First touch: in dribbling and passing scenarios, Staff will grade the player's ability to settle the ball at their feet or in pre-determined directions, as based upon the demands of evaluation exercises
4) Player-to-Player, Player-to-Coach Interaction: while Evaluations will not involve 'games', a player's ability to work within a group environment will be assessed. The Academy seeks out players who are striving to become the very best, and who demonstrate qualities such as confidence, poise, respect, and determination. Academy Staff will not condone any BEHAVIORAL issues that are destructive to the evaluation session or to other players involved in such sessions. In the event it is deemed appropriate and necessary, a player can be removed from the session
5) Technical Standard: An overriding demand of the evaluations, amongst Staff, is to determine each players level against the standard. It's important to understand that, in this way, a player is measured against not only players present in that particular evaluation sessions, but also against players in all other evaluations for that particular age group as well as players currently involved in The Riverhounds Academy who were not required to participate in evaluations.
What Age Group is my child in? The Riverhounds Academy follows the following age breakdown -
Age as of August 1st, 2014 Example - If a player is age 11 prior to the August 1st date then that player would be a U12 player for the Riverhounds Winter Academy.

Below is a message from Thilo Bensch he is the Youth Board President for Pa West. In 2015 all coaches will have to complete some training to coach their team. This is a head start to establish the program. It will strart with the online module which you will need to pass then. There will be a outdoor module at various locations to complete that module more information on that later. For now the online module is here for you to complete. Instructions are below from Pa West.
Coaching the younger age groups is crucial for player development. Recruiting parents to become coaches has always been a task and we trust that providing these new coaches with some essential tools will benefit them and foremost our players.
Consider incentives for those who complete the modules, such as free registration, stipends to cover cost (gas/phone) or a coach shirt. Keep in mind the modules are free, so share the online part with your Club members. Parents are welcome to use the online module. Educated parents are a plus and it helps them understand the sport. Hopefully this way you get some interested in becoming coaches.
The following link will get you to the online modules:
https://education.usyouthsoccer.org/Your coaches/parents will have to create individual accounts. From there coaches select the class (U6 select U6-U8 Youth Module PA West Online and U10 select U10-U12 Youth Module PA West Online) and with that, the online module can begin. Coaches can stop at any time and continue wherever they’ve left off later. At the very end, the certificate of completion needs to be printed. Coaches need to provide this receipt at the field session.
All available field sessions will be listed here: http://www.pawest-soccer.org/coaches/Coaching_Calendar.htm (check for frequent updates)
This requirement is for all U6 In-House U10 Travel and U10 Academy coaches (effective September 1, 2015). Exempt are all coaches that have attended prior coaching classes including Youth Modules U6/8 and U10/12, E Licenses and higher.
Thanks, and your support is very much appreciated.
